Singapore Art Museum opened its doors in 1996 in the month of January. The museum is housed in St Josephs Institution, a 19th century restored building located on Bras Basah Road. The exhibitions of Century of Art and Themes in Southeast Asian Art have been staged by this Singapore museum.
Several shows were held in the museum like the Scientist-Inventor Artist, Leonardo da Vinci, Art in Independent India, Tryst with Destiny, Monet to Moore, The Origins of modern Art in France and others which have enhanced the advancement of art in Southeast Asia.
Today the museum houses over 4000 works of art which is the largest art collection of 20th century Southeast Asia. There are country based collections in this museum of Singapore like The Land & Her People, on Malaysia and on Indonesia and others.
Singapore Art Museum offers the visitors progressive museum facilities, a lively and interactive center of art. The museum sprawls over an area of 10,000 square meters which include 14 galleries which have full climate control, an E-mage electronic gallery where the display of the museum are shown on a monitor, an auditorium, a reference library, a museum shop, a multi-purpose hall, a café and courtyards. All these together offer a complete superior experience to the visitors.
Since its inception Singapore Art Museum has played key role in enhancing the cultural riches of Singapore. This museum in Singapore remains open from 10 am to 7 pm from Monday to Sunday. On Fridays it opens at 10 am and closes at 9pm.
