St. John Island

The beauty of Singapore is indescribable and is accentuated by the tranquility exuded by the numerous islands surrounding the mainland of the nation. If you are looking for a vacation sheltered by nature in a place far away from the humdrum of the busy life of the central city of Singapore, there cannot be a better place than one of these islands that make up the entire landmass of Singapore. Some of these islands have historical importance; some have religious significance and still others remain exceedingly crowded almost all through year due to the various nature parks and other attractions that the island is home to. But if you like seclusion and wish to run away from noises, head for St. John Island, where nature resides in abundance and the lush greenery meets the glistening dancing waters in a magical harmony.

Serenity is the predominant attraction on St. John Island, but this does not account for the fact that there are no other opportunities for entertainment and recreation. The soft touch of the glowing sunlight will tan you perfectly and the shades of the palm will lull you to sleep. Take a walk down the long sandy beaches or see the numerous colorful fishes swimming around in happiness, swim in the warm lagoon water, cycle or play soccer or watch the white-bellied sea eagles sweeping down in perfect grace to get a prey – St. John Island provided all those elements which are perhaps the simplest and the most sublime of sights and sounds that will fill up your senses completely.

The St. John Island did not develop in one day’s time. It has some history behind it which dates back to the time when the island was converted into quarantine for those immigrants detected with leprosy and was part of the penal settlement. Over the years, the island developed as a major tourist attraction and today innumerable locals visit the island on the weekends. From picnics to camping to trekking through the mangrove forests, the island promises a lot and despite the influx of visitors, the beaches are kept surprisingly clean.

Reaching the island is easy as you will get ferries from the Sentosa as well as Kusu Island as well as from Marina South Pier. On reaching the island, you can get to one of the holiday camps or at the Holiday Bungalow which can accommodate guests numbering ten to sixty. You can also get fresh food and drinks at the cafeteria on the island.
